Unit 2 Activity 5: WITCHERY AND THE ART OF FAMILIARITY AND FEAR 

During the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries artists worked using the techniques of woodcut, steel point and engraving to produce images based around witches.

What to do

  1. Research the history of the techniques of woodcut, steel (silver) point and engraving to find art work examples.
  2. Research the history of the witch in western culture and collect information about art works dealing with the topic.
  3. Document the techniques, ideas and purposes of four art works about witches from the centuries listed above. You do not have to cover all of the centuries. Discuss the similarities that you find amongst your examples.

What to submit

  • 300 – 500 words, including illustrations
  • Bibliography

Assessment

This activity will be assessed against criteria 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.
